Comprehensive Japanese Grammar Textbook

Postby clownba0t » Wed Apr 14, 2010 12:16 pm

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone might be able to recommend a comprehensive Japanese grammar textbook that they have used? Recently I've been studying from the Japan Times' grammar dictionaries, which are great for learning about individual constructs (for example, the comparative "~のほうが~より~") but not so useful for learning about sections of grammar (for example, comparatives).

Thanks in advance!

My favorite grammar books are the Kanzen Master (完全マスター)series which are meant for studying JLPT grammar but are useful for the general Japanese student. There is sparse or no translation at all in the books so be aware, but I personally find that helpful. The format is kind of sparse, however, so for more discussion of topics/structures you may just want to read through Tae Kim's grammar guide: www.guidetojapanese.org (note that he really only covers basic, essential grammar).

Hi Colin,

Thanks for that - I'll take a look next time I'm at Junkudo. My kanji isn't too strong unfortunately, but I don't mind sitting down with a dictionary if I know it's going to be worth it. Getting in some reading and sentence comprehension practise wouldn't hurt me either :P

Thanks again.
