Library

Then

In the past, Hyogo AJET had a Librarian position. This person took on the responsibility of a great number of books. Any member of Hyogo AJET could check out these books, and the Librarian would send their requests via mail.

Now

With the key phrase above being “in the past,” the way we access books has drastically changed. The emergence and expansion of E-books makes it possible for us to purchase and read a digital copy of just about any book within seconds.  Additionally, online stores with flexible pay options, such as amazon.co.jp, make it possible for us to get our hands on a print book within as little as one business day. Those options are far more efficient than waiting for a request to be processed by a librarian—a volunteer oftentimes with a busy schedule.

Still, there is something special about browsing through a collection of books. You can pick one up and page through it. You can sit down and choose to read any number of pages for as long as you’d like before deciding on it. That is why we’ve chosen to keep a network of libraries. The books from the Hyogo AJET Library now comprise the Awaji Library, one of currently two libraries in the Hyogo network.

The current libraries in this network function under a different principle. Rather than getting books delivered, JETs will now visit the library closest to them. There is no limit to the number of books one can check out, nor is there a due date for returning them. JETs are responsible for returning the books.

Any JET is welcome to borrow from any library. Check out information on a library close to you!
