Wonder Rings
From HyogoAJET
How to make the "Wonder Rings"
If you read the dialog in lesson 1 it's a wonder (haha) how anyone could possibly understand how to make those damn rings, with such a sparten description and illustrations that aren't super helpful. But here is a guide to making them that is more detailed than the textbook.
- Take a standard A4 sized piece of paper and cut it in half (so you have two long strips).
- Take one half and cut it in half (again, lengthwise). These two halves are a pretty suitable size for making the rings.
- Using glue, make two rings out of the halves.
- Glue one ring to the inside of the other ring Use liberal amounts of glue so the two rings are firmly attached to each other. The finished product should look like a plus if you look at it from the top.
- Take your scissors and make a small cut in the middle of one ring and then cut all the way down it.
- After that, cut the the other ring in the same manner. NOTE: don't cut two rings at the same time, or you will end up with a result that is, in the words of one of my students, "new fashion" (i.e., you will look really stupid).
- The end result is that your two rings should now be one square. That's the trick. Yay.
Moebius Rings
The second trick in the dialog is virtually identical to the first, with the exception that it uses moebius rings instead of normal rings. Follow the instructions above using moebius rings in substitution for the the normal ones. You have to be a little more careful about not cutting through two rings while you are cutting down the middle of one ring. The end result should be two normal rings that are linked together. Note that the rings have to be cut correctly (I don't know quite how), otherwise you end up with two disconnected rings. In your class there is likely to be several students who end up with these "misses", but there will likely be at least a few who do it correctly (enough to let them all see what the end result is).
