While these guys really aren&#8217;t mochi but in fact intricately designed cakes, they are omiyage \u00e3\u0081\u0160\u00e5\u0153\u0178\u00e7\u201d\u00a3 and so kawaii I couldn&#8217;t resist!!!<\/p>\n<p>During my last top to \u00e6\u009d\u00b1\u00e4\u00ba\u00ac I picked a box of Gomatamago \u00e3\u0081\u201d\u00e3\u0081\u00be\u00e3\u0081\u0178\u00e3\u0081\u00be\u00e3\u0081\u201d (Lit. Black Sesame Egg) cakes on my way home as the packaging intrigued me. Furthermore Gomatamago are a meibutsu \u00e5\u0090\u008d\u00e7\u2030\u00a9 (specialty product) of the Tokyo region, so it&#8217;s not as if I would have the opportunity to purchase them again in the near future. As far as omiyage go, these are on the pricey side of things at 700\u00e5\u2020\u2020 for a box containing 8 eggs. That said, they are each individually wrapped and sizeable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyogoajet.net\/hyogotimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/IMG_4168.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2812\" alt=\"IMG_4168\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hyogoajet.net\/hyogotimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/IMG_4168-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hyogoajet.net\/hyogotimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/IMG_4168-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hyogoajet.net\/hyogotimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/IMG_4168-512x341.jpg 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The centre is a sweet paste consisting of kurogoma \u00e9\u00bb\u2019\u00e8\u0192\u00a1\u00e9\u00ba\u00bb (black sesame seeds) and anko \u00e9\u00a4\u00a1\u00e5\u00ad\u0090 (red bean paste) which is supposed to constitute the &#8216;yolk&#8217; of the egg \u00e2\u20ac\u201c perhaps they are meant to be piitan \u00e7\u0161\u00ae\u00e8\u203a\u2039 (Chinese century eggs) ( ^\u00cf\u2030^ ). This &#8216;yolk&#8217; is then coated in a thin layer of kasutera \u00e3\u201a\u00ab\u00e3\u201a\u00b9\u00e3\u0192\u2020\u00e3\u0192\u00a9 (castella cake), a type of Japanese cake whose origins lie in 16<sup>th<\/sup> century Nagasaki and trade with Portugal. It is immensely popular these days. Finally the tamago is coated in a thin layer of white-chocolate to form a delicious crispy &#8216;shell&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>All in all I was quite impressed by this tasty treat.
