Immigration Offices

Whether you need to extend your period of stay or change your status of residence, at some point you will probably need to head over to one of the joint government buildings (合同庁舎) in Hyogo. You have two places to choose from: Kobe and Himeji.

How To Get There:
Walking:
From JR Sannomiya, walk straight south down Flower Road. After around 10 minutes you will be at an intersection just before a massive elevated highway. This is the bypass to Osaka. Turn right here and keep walking. After a few minutes you’ll see a big, plain brown building on your right, set back a little from the road with a car park. It’s hard to miss.
Driving: There are several road signs that point the way. Drive to the Sannomiya triangular meeting area (“t*ts park”), and follow the wide road heading south under the JR train line and towards the sea (this is Flower Road). While following this road, you’ll see signs for the immigration office that indicate a right turn. Take the turn and look for a large brown building, or pull over and ask someone where the Nyukoku Kanrikyoku is. Good luck!

How To Get There:
Public Transport:
Catch the number 94 bus from the bus station on the south side of JR Himeji Station (姫路駅 (南口)) and stay on it until the last stop, which is Himeji Port (姫路港). You will be outside a building called the Himeji Port Center (姫路ポートセンター). This is not the Immigration Office, but you should go inside this building to purchase your postage stamps at the small convenience store* there. The Immigration Office itself is to the west of the Port Center building. From the Himeji Port bus stop, start to walk back along the route that the bus took to get to the port. You will notice two fairly large buildings on your right – the first is the Port Management building (兵庫県姫路港管理) and the second is the Himeji Port Governmental Joint Building (大阪入国管理局神戸支局姫路港出張所). The Immigration Office is on the second floor of the latter.
Driving: Himeji Port is at the south of the city. From the north side of JR Himeji station, drive towards the castle for one block and turn left at the Conservo Bakery. Follow the signs that lead you around the station to the south side, and head southward for the Himeji Bypass Minami Ramp, towards the sea.
Keep going straight, and pass underneath the Himeji Bypass. Continue until you reach the signal intersection where the road you are on intersects with R250. On your right there should be a large building with “Midori” written on it and a huge flashing neon tree. If you’re not at this intersection, turn onto R250 and follow it until you find this building with the big “Midori” tree.
Once at the intersection, there should be a narrow road leading into the port area ahead of you. Continue straight ahead through the intersection, and follow the winding road for a distance. The immigration office is a four story building on your left, at a wide intersection. It is near the docks and storage buildings, beside the sea. There is no sign facing the road, but there is a sign that says “Himeji Customs” on the south side of the Himeji Port Governmental Joint Building.
